Bridlington U3A - Hearing Loss

Hearing loss increases sharply with age. About one third of people in their sixties and three quarters of people in their seventies have a significant hearing loss.

Signs to watch out for

1.   Other people tend to mumble.

2.   People have to repeat things several times.

3.   You have difficulty hearing what is being said in noisy places such as     pubs or restaurants, although other people are managing to have conversations.

4.   If you are talking to people in a group it is hard to keep up with the conversation, although when speaking one-to-one you are OK.

5.   You find it tiring to listen to conversations because you find it hard to concentrate.

6.   Other people think your television or music is too loud but you cannot hear it if you turn it down.

7.   You often have difficulty hearing on the telephone.

8.   If any of these signs sound familiar, it is possible that you have a hearing loss.

9.   Go and see the doctor. She/he will refer you to audiology.
