Bridlington U3A Mission Statement Coming together in friendship to find joy and renewal in recreation, learning and teaching, through a vibrant, effective and inclusive local U3A supported by a community of dedicated volunteers Bridlington U3A - Italian Getting Started in Italian: Thursdays (not last in month) 11am-12.30pm. Leader’s home. No charge for the session; 30p for coffee, tea and chocolate biscuits. This is a course for absolute beginners and it assumes no prior knowledge of Italian. The emphasis is on speaking and listening and we enjoy a bit of singing along the way. We use the basic BBC text book ‘Buongiorno Italia!’ (which has an accompanying CD) for part of the session. You will also need a small dictionary. The aim of this first course is to enjoy and become confident in using and hearing simple Italian phrases and constructions for daily life, such as shopping, ordering food, asking for directions. At this stage there is little emphasis on formal grammar. Getting Going in Italian: Thursdays (not last in month) 1pm-2.30pm. Leader’s home. No charge for the session; 30p for coffee, tea and chocolate biscuits. This course builds on the first course ‘Getting started in Italian.’ It assumes some basic knowledge of Italian as well as a small vocabulary. We continue to use the basic BBC text book ‘Buongiorno Italia!’ (which has an accompanying CD) for part of the session, supplemented by handouts focusing on particular topics. You will also need a small dictionary. The aim of this second course is to enable members of the group to continue to use everyday phrases but also to begin to construct novel sentences and phrases independently. There is more focus on the grammar of Italian; we learn formal constructions and regular and irregular verbs, whilst almost wholly remaining in the present tense. The emphasis remains on speaking and listening but we also read short Italian texts and we continue to enjoy Italian songs. Getting There in Italian: Thursdays (not last in month) 2.30pm-4pm. Leader’s home. No charge for the session: 30p for coffee, tea and chocolate biscuits. This course builds on the second course ‘Getting Going in Italian.’ It assumes a willingness to speak Italian (however imperfectly), some basic knowledge of Italian grammar as well as a more extensive vocabulary. We continue to use the BBC text book ‘Buongiorno Italia!’ (which has an accompanying CD) for part of the session, but this is considerably supplemented by handouts focusing on particular grammatical topics. This is not, however, an advanced course for fluent speakers of Italian. The aim of this third course is to extend grammatical knowledge and vocabulary and to help each other find enjoyment in having a good go at communicating in Italian. Members are introduced to the past and future tenses, and we learn about the joys and complexities of Italian pronouns. There is no emphasis on the written word although we do write occasionally to help prompt and support speaking. We continue to use popular Italian songs for inspiration and pleasure.
